Morning and Evening Adhkar: Easy Duas for Powerful Protection

by in Soul on 3rd October, 2024

Morning and evening adhkar are a collection of short, powerful du’as that offer protection, guidance, and connection to Allah as taught to us by our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Starting and ending our day with the remembrance of Allah brings order and barakah into our lives. In the hustle of modern life, these adhkar ground us, helping to align our actions and intentions as we face the day and protecting us as we sleep.

Allah says in the Qur’an,

“And remember [O Prophet] your Lord in your mind, with humility and fear, and without raising your voice; remember Him in the morning and evening, and do not become of those who are negligent.” (Surah Al-A’raf 7:205)

It may seem overwhelming to incorporate these into your morning and evening routine, especially in the midst of life’s busy demands. But spending just a few moments dedicated to remembering Allah can uplift your spirit. Reciting them after Fajr and Asr is ideal, but they can be done at any point during the morning and evening respectively. Some people find it helpful to write these down and place them somewhere visible, like next to the prayer mat, on the phone, or even on the fridge! You can also listen to these adhkar while commuting to and from work, making breakfast, or preparing dinner to help build the habit.

The Prophet ﷺ emphasised the importance of remembering and glorifying Allah in the morning and evening multiple times.

Narrated Abu Musa, the Prophet ﷺ said, “The example of the one who celebrates the Praises of his Lord (Allah ) in comparison to the one who does not celebrate the Praises of his Lord, is that of a living creature compared to a dead one.” (Bukhari)

Abud-Darda (May Allah be pleased with him) reported, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Shall I not inform you of the best of your actions which are the purest to your Rubb, which exalt you to the high ranks, which are more efficacious than spending gold and silver (in charity), and better for you than you should encounter your enemies whom you will smite their necks and they will smite your necks?” They said, “Certainly.” He ﷺ said, “Remembrance of Allah the Exalted.” (Tirmidhi)

Recite the following adhkar once unless otherwise specified. With consistency, these powerful remembrances will become a natural and beautiful part of your daily routine.

Ayat Al-Kursi, The Verse of the Throne

A’udhu billahi mina-sh-Shaytani-r-rajim

Allahu la ilaha illa Huwa-l-hayyul-qayyum. La ta’khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm. Lahu ma fissamawati wa ma fil-ard. Man dhalladhi yashfa’u ‘indahu illa bi-idhnih.

“I seek the protection of Allah from the accursed Shaytan.”

“Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255)

This verse, also known as the Verse of the Throne, serves as a powerful shield over us, reminding us of Allah’s greatness and our reliance on Him alone.

I seek Your protection from the evil that I have done. I acknowledge the favours that You have bestowed upon me, and I admit my sins. Forgive me, for none forgives sins but You.”

Narrated Shaddad bin Aus,

The Prophet ﷺ said “This is the most superior way of asking for forgiveness from Allah .” The Prophet ﷺ added. “If somebody recites it during the day with firm faith in it, and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise; and if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it, and dies before the morning, he will be from the people of Paradise.” (Bukhari)
