When we go for Umrah, we see many pilgrims holding small booklets and reciting designated du’as for each round of the tawaf and sa’ee. Contrary to common belief, there are no specific du’as associated with each round of these rituals. 

According to Shaikh ul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, “In tawaf, there is no specific dhikr that was narrated from the Prophet ﷺ, that he ﷺ either enjoined, said or taught. Rather whilst doing tawaf, the pilgrim may offer any du’as from the Qur’an and Sunnah. What many people mention of a specific du‘a to be recited beneath the mizab (downspout) and the like, has no basis.” (Majmu‘ al-Fatawa 26/122)

Nevertheless, the Prophet ﷺ offered supplications at various points during Umrah, providing us with instances to draw inspiration from. This list of du’as from the Qur’an and Sunnah is not an exhaustive one; you can make du’as of your choice during Umrah, including personal ones for family and friends. There is also no requirement to recite your supplications exclusively in Arabic. Understanding the meaning of the du’as you make is emphasised over mere recitation for its sake. 

We hope this list serves as a helpful guide, making your Umrah experience more meaningful.

1. Du’a before starting your Journey

Before setting foot on the holy grounds of Makkah, it is crucial to spiritually prepare oneself. 

The recommended du’a before leaving the house (Du’a al-Safar) is a means to seek Allah’s protection, guidance and support during the journey. (Riyad as-Salihin 83)

بسم الله توكلت على الله، ولا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله

Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.

“I begin with the Name of Allah; I trust in Allah; there is no altering of conditions but by the Power of Allah.”

2. Du’a for Mounting an Animal or Boarding a Vehicle

اَللهُ أَكْبَرُ ، اَللهُ أَكْبَرُ ، اَللهُ أَكْبَرُ ، سُبْحَانَ الَّذِيْ سَخَّرَ لَنَا هٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِيْنَ ، وَإِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُوْنَ ، اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ فِيْ سَفَرِنَا هٰذَا الْبِرَّ وَالتَّقْوَىٰ ، وَمِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضَىٰ ، اَللّٰهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هٰذَا وَاطْوِ عَنَّا بُعْدَهُ ، اَللّٰهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ ، وَالْخَلِيْفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ ، اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ ، وَكَآبَةِ الْمَنْظَرِ ، وَسُوْءِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ فِيْ الْمَالِ وَالْأَهْلِ

Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, subḥāna-l-ladhī sakkhara lanā hādhā wa mā kunnā lahū muqrinīn, wa innā ilā rabbinā la-munqalibūn, Allāhumma innā nas’aluka fī safarinā hādhā-l-birra wa-t-taqwā, wa mina-l-ʿamali mā tarḍā, Allāhumma hawwin ʿalaynā safaranā hādhā wa-ṭ-wi’ ʿannā buʿdah, allāhumma Anta-ṣ-ṣāḥibu fi-s-safar, wa-l-khalīfatu fi-l-ahl, allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min waʿthāi-s-safar, wa kaābati-l-manẓar, wa sū’i-l-munqalabi fi-l-māli wa-l-ahl.

“Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest. How perfect is the One Who has given us control over this; we could not have done it by ourselves. Truly it is to our Lord that we are returning. O Allah, we ask You for piety, taqwā and deeds which You will be pleased with on this journey of ours. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and let us cover its distance swiftly. O Allah, You are our Companion on the journey and the One in Whose care we leave our family. O Allah, I seek Your protection from the difficulties of the journey, from distressing scenes, and from an ill-fated outcome with my wealth and family.”

Ibn Umar (RA) reported,

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would mount his camel for travel, he would exalt Allah three times and then say, “[the above dua] When the Prophet ﷺ returned, he would say these words and add to them, “We are those who return, those who repent, those who worship and who praise our Lord.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1342)

3. Du’a upon arrival

أَعُوْذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللّٰهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

A’udzu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq.

“I seek refuge in Allah’s perfect words from every evil (that has been created).”

4. Du’a before entering Ihram

It is recommended that one recites tasbeeh, tahleel and takbeer.

سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ ، اَللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ

Subhan Allah, La ilaha ill Allah, Allahu Akbar.

“Glory be to Allah, there is no god but Allah, Allah is Most Great.”

5. Du’a for Making the Intention for Performing Umrah

Once you’ve entered the state of Ihram, perform two rakahs of Sunnat-ul Ihram. Then, make the intention of performing Umrah in the following words:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أُرِيْدُ الْعُمْرَةَ فَيَسِّرْهَا لِيْ وَتَقَبَّلْهَا مِنِّيْ

Allahumma innee uridul umrah; fayassir haa li wa taqabbalahaa minnee.

“O Allah! I intend to perform Umrah. Make it easy for me and accept it in Your books.”

6. Talbiyah (intention to start worship) for Umrah

When we enter Ihram for Hajj or Umrah, we begin reciting the Talbiyah. Talbiyah should be recited as much as possible throughout our journey. It is recommended to read it in all conditions including while standing, sitting, walking, travelling in a vehicle, laying down, in a state of minor or major impurity or during menstruation. Umrah pilgrims should stop reciting it just before the commencement of the Tawaf of Umrah.

It is recommended to repeat the Talbiyah three or more times.

It was narrated from Jabir bin ‘Abdullah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “There is no Muhrim (pilgrim in Ihram) who exposes himself to the sun all day for the sake of Allah, reciting the Talbiyah until the sun goes down, but his sins will disappear and he will go back like on the day his mother bore him.” (Sunan Ibn Majah)

Because of the frequency of its recitation, it’s important to understand the profound meanings so we can strengthen our connection with Allah SWT. This will bring a sweet depth to our communication with Him inshaAllah.

لَبَّيْكَ اللهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ,  لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ , إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ , لَا شَرِيْكَ لَكَ 

Labbayka Allahumma Labbayk. Labbayka La Sharika Laka Labbayk. Innal Hamda Wan-ni’mata laka Wal-mulk. La Sharika Lak.

“Here I am at your service, O Allah, Here I am at Your service. Here I am at Your service, You have no partner, here I am at Your service. Truly all praise and blessings belong to You, and so does sovereignty. You have no partner.”

7. Du’a as you enter the Masjid Al Haram

When you enter Masjid Al Haram to perform Umrah, place your right foot first and recite the following du’a.

Bismillahi wal hamdulillahi wassalatu a’laa Rasulillah, Allahummaghfirlee zunoobee waf tahlee abwaaba rahmatik.

“I begin in the name of Allah, all praise be to Him, and Blessings be upon the Prophet of Allah; O Allah, forgive my sins and open for me the gates of Your mercy.”

8. Du’a for the first sight of Kaaba

It was reported that when the Prophet ﷺ first set sight on the Kaaba, he ﷺ recited the following supplications.

اَللَّهُمَّ زِدْ هَذَا الْبَيْتَ تَشْرِيفاً وَتَعْظِيماً وَتَكْرِيماً وَمَهَابَةً، وَزِدْ مَنْ شَرَّفَهُ وَكَرَّمَهُ مِمَّنْ حَجَّهُ أَوْ اعْتَمَرَهُ تَشْرِيفاً وَتَكْرِيماً وَتَعْظِيماً وَبِرّاً

Allahumma zid hadha l-bayta tashrifan wa ta’dhiman wa takriman wa mahaba(tan), wa zid man sharrafahu wa karramahu mimman hajjahu awtamarahu tashrifan wa takriman wa ta’dhiman wa birra.

“O Allah, increase this House in honour and esteem, reverence and awe, and increase the one who honours and ennobles it, of those who travel to it for Hajj or Umrah, in honour, esteem, reverence and piety.”

اَللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ السَّلاَمُ وَمِنْكَ السَّلَامُ، حَيِّنَا رَبَّنَا بِالسَّلاَمِ

Allahumma anta s-salamu wa minka s-salamu hayyina Rabbana bi s-salam.

“O Allah, You are peace, and from You is peace, so give us life, our Lord, in the Abode of Peace.”

9. Du’as to Recite During Tawaf

Tawaf refers to circumambulating or walking in circles around the Kaaba in an anti-clockwise motion. Seven complete circuits, with each one starting and ending at the Hajar al Aswad (The Black Stone), constitute one tawaf. When you stand facing the black stone to make the intention of the tawaf, recite the following dua

Bismillahi Allahu Akbar wa lillahil hamd.

“I begin with the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest, and all Praise be to Allah.”

For the remainder of tawaf, we have the choice between dhikr, du‘a and reciting the Qur’an.

Ibn Qudamah said,

“It is mustahabb (beloved) to offer supplication (du‘a) and remember Allah, may He be exalted, a great deal (dhikr) whilst doing tawaf, because that is mustahabb in all circumstances, so in the case of this act of worship it is even more apt. It is also mustahabb to refrain from speaking, apart from remembering Allah, may He be exalted, reciting Qur’an, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, or saying what cannot be avoided.” 

When the Prophet ﷺ came between the Yemeni corner of the Kaaba and the Hajar al-Aswad during tawaf, he would recite the following du’a,

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِيْ الدُنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَّفِيْ الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَّقِنَا عَذَابَ النَار

Rabbanaa aatinaa fiddunya hasanah wa fil akhirati hasanah wa qinaa aza’ab annaar.

“Lord, grant us good in this life and good in the hereafter and save us from the punishment of the fire.” (Sunan Abi Dawud 1892)

Although there are no specific du’as mentioned for tawaf, you can recite any du’a that you wish to or read the Qur’an. Below is a compilation of several beautiful du’as that you can read:

After completing the Tawaf, the sunnah is to go to Maqam-e-Ibrahim, pray two brief rak’ahs behind it, then get up immediately after saying the tasleem, to leave room for others, specially those who want to pray the two rak’ahs following tawaf.

10. Du’a for drinking ZamZam

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمَاً نَافِعَاًً وَرِزْقَاً وَاسِعَاًَ وَشِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ

Allahumma innee as’aluka ilman na’fiaa, wa rizqa’w wa-si’aa, wa shifa’an min kulli da’aa

“O Allah, I seek beneficial knowledge, wide sustenance and cure from all ailments from You.”

11. Du’as for Sa’ee

Sa’ee is a mandatory step in Umrah that involves walking back and forth between the two hills, Safa and Marwah, seven times. You may recite the following verse from the Holy Qur’an when you climb the Safa hill for the first time:

 إِنَّ ٱلصَّفَا وَٱلْمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَآئِرِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ فَمَنْ حَجَّ ٱلْبَيْتَ أَوِ ٱعْتَمَرَ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِ أَن يَطَّوَّفَ بِهِمَا ۚ وَمَن تَطَوَّعَ خَيْرًۭا فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ شَاكِرٌ عَلِيمٌ

Innassafaa wal marwata min sha’airillah, faman hajj al baeeta awi’tamara falaa junaaha a’laihi aiyattawwafa bihi maa, wa man tatawwa’a khairan fa innAllaha shaakirun a’leem.

“Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. Hence, whosoever performs Hajj or Umrah at the holy Kaabah can safely walk between them without fearing any sin. And Allah Knows and Appreciates him who does any good with a willing heart.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:158)

12. Du’a on top of Mount Safa

اَللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ اَللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ اَللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَهُ ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ ، وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيْرٌ ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ ، أَنْجَزَ وَعْدَهُ ، وَنَصَرَ عَبْدَهُ ، وَهَزَمَ الْأَحْزَابَ وَحْدَهُ

Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La illaha illAllahu wahdahu la shareekalahu, lahul mul ku wa lahul hamdu, wa huwa ‘ala kulli shai’in qadeer. Laa ilaha illAllahu wahdahu anjaza wa’dahu, wa nasara ‘abdahu wa hadhamal ahzaaba wahdahu

“Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is none truly worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and all praise. He alone gives life and causes death, and He is All-Powerful over everything. There is none truly worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner. He has fulfilled His promise, and helped His servant, and He alone has defeated the confederates.” (Hisn al-Muslim 236)

There are no specific du’as or supplications for Sa’ee. You can recite any du’a from your memory, including:

SubhanAllah, walHamdulilah, wa La illaha ilAllahu, waAllahu Akbar, La hawla wa laqu-aata illah billah

“Glory be to Allah, All Praise is for Allah, There is No God but Allah, Allah is the Greatest. There is no Might or Power except with Allah.

12. Du’a for leaving Al Haram

After completing this beautiful journey, you can recite the following du’a when leaving Masjid Al Haram.

بِسْمِ اللّهِ وَالصَّلاَةُ وَالسَّلاَمُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللّهِ، اَللَّهُـمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْـلِكَ

Bismillah — wassalatu wassalamu ala Rasoolillah, allahumma innee as-aluka min fadlik.

“In the name of Allah, and prayers and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, I ask You from Your favour.”

As we recite these du’as, let us remember the essence of our pilgrimage, seeking not only the fulfilment of personal supplications but also the blessings and mercy of Allah SWT for all humanity.
