We all know how a manicured set of nails, whether on our hands or feet, can be the perfect finishing touch to boost our mood and bring an outfit or look together. But as Muslim women, the process of getting your nails done, can be somewhat…tricky! For me, it often involves an arduous process of searching and syncing my nail tech’s availability with my menstrual cycle; and if you’re like me and suffer from PCOS that can be an even more daunting task given that my periods are highly unpredictable and half the time, don’t actually show up.
Do I make a booking? Will my period show up? Do I pay for a full manicure/set only for my period to end after 3 days? I know to some, this may seem like a trivial topic, but these are genuine questions I have to process before making a booking or even thinking about painting my nails.
I know some of you must be thinking, “but what about halal nail varnish sis?” Well, this is where I sit on the issue: there is mixed opinions on these products and I’m not willing to take the risk of potentially compromising my Salah just for the sake of painted nails. I’m still not 100% sold on the concept and that’s my personal preference.
So far, the only sensible and Salah-friendly option I seem to have come across was to maintain and take care of my natural nails. I’ve pretty much tried out all the recommended products in Holland and Barrett’s hair and nail aisle with the hopes of turning my carrot stick fingers into something a little more refined — but unfortunately, I haven’t had much success with this route either. It was only by chance, as I was looking through Treatwell’s menu that I noticed something called a ‘Japanese Manicure’ – I was instantly intrigued the moment I saw the words “polish free” in the description. I was instantly sold and decided to book myself a treatment.
Could this finally be the answer to all my grooming woes?
To keep it short, a Japanese manicure is based on ancient Japanese beauty techniques that involve buffing nutrients, such as Vitamin A and E, into the nail bed to give the nail a super healthy and shiny look. Combined with the right cuticle care, you’re left with polished-looking nails, without any actual polish involved! The treatment stimulates healthy nail growth, achieved through the buffing technique which increases blood flow to the nail bed, perfect for those with damaged nails (fragile, brittle and splitting ends).
The Verdict
A definite HIT! The treatment took an average of 30-40 mins and the shine achieved during the treatment itself last for approximately 2 weeks, despite wudhu and my regular and rigorous hand-washing in the current pandemic.
Here are some shots from the treatment:

If you’re looking to achieve healthy, presentable nails that make you feel good, ALL without compromising your Salah, then this treatment is for you! It’s a game changing treatment discovery that I just had to share in the hopes that it will help all those who may be going through similar struggles.
