Nomia Iqbal presented today’s show on BBC Asian Network which spoke about racial discrimination as well as the lack of representation seen at Dubai Modest Fashion Week. The show featured Najwa Umran who started the campaign #BlackMuslimahExcellence and Halimat Shode, founder of The Black Muslim Times.
At 2:55 Nomia said,”This might be a provocative question but I’d be interested to know what your answers are, do you think you can be Black and Muslim?”. And of course, Twitter came with it.
im just trying to understand why this bbc journalist asked if you can be black and muslim ???????????????????? pic.twitter.com/gzWTaW3fiR

Najwa who was on the show talking about #BlackMuslimahExcellence, as well as the other guests was dumbfounded by the question.

Nomia has since responded with the following tweet:
It was rhetorical given the racism we know exists and I provided context on air – my guests understood that. If those with a problem truly want to understand, I suggest listen to the entire discussion instead of just the few seconds that are being disingenuously focused on. https://t.co/U64XARG491
