I Thought I Could Outperform My Identity…

by in Culture & Lifestyle on 5th December, 2017

What does being a woman on an oil rig have in common with being a Muslim in Australia? Watch Yassmin Abdel-Magied give an impassioned speach about what it means to be misunderstood and misrepresented in the press and culture.

“What is it like when you show up and don’t look like anyone else? My name is Yassmin Abdel-Magied and I have the blessing of associating with multiple identities. First and foremost, I am a Muslim, Alhamdulillah. I was born in Sudan and raised in Australia. I am the Founder and Chair of an organisation based in Australia, Youth Without Borders. I am also a mechanical engineer, with a passion for adventures, football, boxing, and motorsport. Working with community, hours spent in endless philosophy discussions (sprinkled with terrible puns) and debates on international relations are also pastimes that keep me happily occupied.”

She is currently in the UK and writing a book amongst many other projects and activities!
